Daily /r/2007scape question thread for Monday, September 7 2020 (posted on 00:10:47 UTC - RuneScape server time)

Ask anything about Old School RuneScape here! They are designated for you to ask anything you like that is relevant to the game or this subreddit. Remain respectful to your fellow 'scapers when answering questions; there are stupid questions, but it does not mean you should not be respectful whilst answering them.

Items like the rune pouch are the exact kind of thing that would've been a quest reward back in the day

Look at Ava's Accumulator. It's a backpack that picks up your arrows. Something that absolutely everybody needs when ranging, that alleviates a massive inconvenience that exists without its presence.

And yet, in 2006, the developers felt the need to justify it in-world. They created a quite elaborate rube goldberg scheme for how the thing works (it's an undead chicken in a leather pouch with some undead wood and a magnet), and built an entire quest around it that's one of the more charming quests in rs.

While it's something that everybody wanted and needed, quests were the avenue through which this type of thing was introduced. The key ring is another example. That's what quests were very often used for - find a need that everybody has, then find a quest to introduce and justify it.

I think at some point down the line the old school devs forgot about this function of quests, and chucked everything into reward shops instead. There isn't really a justification of these items existing, just that people want them, and they need rewards for a new piece of content - even if the content and the new item aren't at all related.

Would be cool if these items were slowly transitioned over to being quest items. The nightmare zone shop definitely started the trend, and it comes off as a kind of "unpolished early OSRS update" syndrome. Imagine if something like the saradomin's tear had a whole saradomin or monk-related quest behind its origins. Why can I take runes, which normally have to be cast directly from my hand or whatever, and channel them through this bag? Maybe there's a totally unrelated quest that happens, and I just happen to be given a rune pouch by the head of the magic guild partway through, to smuggle some runes in somewhere where they aren't allowed or something. Who knows!

That type of thing just makes the whole world feel more alive and full
