Ask anything about Old School RuneScape here! They are designated for you to ask anything you like that is relevant to the game or this subreddit. Remain respectful to your fellow 'scapers when answering questions; there are stupid questions, but it does not mean you should not be respectful whilst answering them.

    Old School RuneScape's 7th Birthday

Did you know? The construction skill was locked for 11 days at the launch of OSRS, but...

When Oldschool Runescape was released on February 22nd 2013, the construction skill was disabled. You couldn't buy a house; therefore, you couldn't gain experience. You also couldn't use lamps on construction. This was done intentionally because the mods wanted to take some extra time to make sure that the skill was bug-free. The code for POH was very complex and had brought many unintended glitches in the past. So instead of delaying the release of the whole game, they opted to release it but lock some pieces of content that needed some more work, those being construction skill, Barbarian Assault and Slug Menace quest.

For the first few days of OSRS, the players at the top of the construction highscores were level 1, with 0 experience. But on March 2nd, a player found a way around that. The first player to gain construction experience was "MF Greg". He figured that the level 5 construction required for the quest Darkness of Hallowvale was actually boostable. To boost to level 5, he used spicy stews. This quest rewards you with 2k experience, so he went from level 1 to level 13.

With his level 13 construction, the player was able to start and completed a few more quests that were previously locked because they required construction levels.

-The Eyes of Glouphrie had a non-boostable level 5 requirement and gave 250 experience.
-Tower of Life had a level 10 requirement and gave 1k experience.
-The Fremennik Isles had a level 20 requirement and gave a 5k experience reward.

Other players quickly realized how MF Greg was gaining his experience and started to catch up. Most notably, B0aty was among the firsts to follow this path and he sat in the top 10 on the highscores for a few days. Overall with this questing method/oversight, players were able to achieve up to level 25 construction (thanks to /u/ImDanny123 for the info). The skill was officially released on March 5th, so 3 days later.
