In the games industry - Mod Ash

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 05:30 AM PST

    Hello once more!

I'm Shauny, I worked for Jagex for close to six years, during that time I was always fascinated about the lives of people who worked on RuneScape/Old School RuneScape.

Recently I've spoken to /u/ModMatK and Dan (Mod Reach) on their time at Jagex and it involved some awesome stories to share, you can watch Dan's interview here

Now the reason why I'm posting is because the one and only Mod Ash has agreed to an interview with me on Today, 19th February at 20:00 UTC on my Twitch channel!

We will be using the same format as previous streams, talking about Ash's life before Jagex, the early days and much more.

if you have anything you'd like me to ask him or chat about please feel free to reply!

Thoughts about the Sir Pugger issues

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 09:46 AM PST

This video lays out a case that Sir Pugger's latest video was staged. I want to specifically address the first point about the bots picking up the clue boxes. In the video, its stated that a competent scripter wouldn't search for items containing the text "clue", they would use the whole name "Clue Scroll (Easy)". They attempt to bolster this point by saying that since the only item on the drop table containing "clue" is the clue scroll, they should DEFINITELY search for the whole name.

First of all this reasoning is ass-backwards. If someone is looking at a list of item names, and there's only one item called "Clue something", that makes them more likely to just search for "clue".

Second, I'm an automation qa engineer and like half of our tests that break are because some asshole who used to work here was lazy when they were identifying objects. They'll just find the first object of a certain type, or only look for one word in a string, because when they were writing it, that found the thing they needed. Just because there's a more robust way to be scripting something doesn't mean that's always how its going to be done, because people are lazy.

Speaking quickly to the other points in the video, as well as some things I noticed that haven't really been discussed.

    1. The fact that some of the players he PK'ed later were just name changes of players he killed previously is SUPER sketchy and I think much more damning evidence than anything else.
    2. I think the clue scroll bots are still really suspicious. As others have pointed out, there's a lot less risky was to get easy clues which require a lot less setup.
    3. Also, why would the clue scroll bots not have teleported right away as soon as they picked up their "clue" item. If the purpose of these bots is to farm clue scrolls, why wouldn't they immediately teleport away when they got one? Again, this is assuming that the bot is well made, but that functionality seems a lot more integral to the purpose of the bot than the text of the items they are looking for.
    4. The mods taking down posts about this is super shitty, fuck that.

Anyway, what do y'all think about this?
