Have a question about the game or the subreddit? Ask away!

    Posted: 09 Sep 2021 05:00 PM PDT

Welcome to the daily /r/2007scape question thread!

You can ask anything about Old School RuneScape here. They are designated for you to ask anything you like that is relevant to the game or this subreddit. Remain respectful to your fellow 'scapers when answering questions; there are stupid questions, but it does not mean you should not be respectful whilst answering them.

Keep in mind that this is not a developer Q&A thread - questions for the game developers should be posted in the weekly developer Q&A posts.

    117Scape's HD Plugin - Update

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 09:32 AM PDT

HD mode for RuneLite will be released on Monday

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 09:32 AM PDT

Discussions with Jagex have been fruitful and we have reached an agreement that I am personally very happy with. To cut to the chase:

HD mode for RuneLite will be released on Monday, September 13 — for free, for everyone.

I will be collaborating with Jagex on the direction of the project going forward so that it remains consistent with their vision for the game. This is not a compromise, it is something I had dreamed of while working on this project.

Thank you to every single one of you for your expressions of dissatisfaction and support, and for making these past few days so positively surreal.

Thank you to Jagex for listening to the outcries and embracing the will of the community.

A scrying portal into the meetings going on at Jagex right now...

    Posted: 09 Sep 2021 10:02 PM PDT

The Zoom meeting opens with 117scape (hereafter conversationally referred to as Bill), Mods Sween, Ayiza, and John C, plus a lawyer and 3 corporate leadership suits who were just put in place earlier this year by the Carlyle Group.

The lowest middle manager (suit #3) joins the meeting last and causes a commotion when he sees that he's on the bottom row of the zoom call. After his ego gets taped back up to the top of the fridge, he allows the meeting to commence.

Top Suit #1, with his webcam pointed up to fit his high-backed executive chair into frame: "Ok Bill, tell us about this little project you've been tinkering with."

117scape: Ok so Oldschool Runescape has graphics that are from the 2007 web browser only period of the game, my project is a free and optional HD pack like the kind that are popular for any PC title. It runs as an extension for Runelite -"

Suit #3: "Wait let me get up to speed here. Runlite is the less resource intense, lite version of the game thats for mobile platforms right? Why aren't you making this for the Steam product?"

Suit #1 nods along with his hands clasped together, thinking only of a $100,000 personal bonus for reaching a Steam growth metric.

The Jmods, who have emailed updates about the HD project and Cc'd all the leadership involved for the past year, steadfastly pretend that they're not annoyed. Mod Sween offers 117scape the chance to explain since he works with the infrastructure.

"So Runelite is a free and open source client that runs on top the base PC game, a majority of players use it. It was created because the official client didn't have many feature updates for over 5 years and a private company was selling often-requested features as a premium subscription."

Suit #1 writes down 'monetize client features' in a leather notebook and decorates it with $ signs while Mod John C jumps in with damage control.

"That was before the series of acquisitions you understand, our team was a quarter the size it is today. Over the past year, under the new direction of the Carlyle Group, we have been working to evolve our client to supercede these 3rd party clients that use hacks to add features on top the game. We aim to cut them out within the 1 year timeframe you laid down to make Steam the primary platform for our game." He conveniently leaves out that those "hack features" are perfectly functional for PC and shorten development time drastically as opposed to manually baking them into an ancient mess of code. Or that there are literally 100 plugins to remake if they want the Steam client to reach parity with what the community already has.

The lawyer steps in with: "Open sourcing a component of an online game is a Pandora's Box of complications, I'm surprised it wasn't cut down sooner."

Mod John C replies that they did once, but because they did it too late it caused a debacle that was almost as big as the one they're in now.

Losing patience, 117scape thinks, "None of this would have happened if they just did the minimum to open source their client API for players to develop, so Jagex could control which game components are available to work with."

There's a lull. Suit #2, engrossed in his own Zoom reflection, thinking about getting his Armani suit tailored to catch up with his cocaine use, realizes that he hasn't said anything yet. To justify his presence he announces: "Now that we're all versed in the technicalities why don't we examine your portfolio to see what we have to work with."

At this point the three suits scrutinize the graphics of a game they've never logged into, of upgraded visuals which have been available for over a year. Which, by the way, is composed in the style of the original concept art where possible.

After canvassing all these medieval towns and landscapes with polite yet substanceless remarks, Suit #2 has to be the first to make a stand.

With the top half of his webcam vandalized by a postmodern wall artpiece, he proclaims: "The water is too beautiful, its far too high fidelity compared to the modern RuneScape product. It's going to cannabalize RuneScape 4 players and undermine the resources we put into that experience. If we're going to come to an agreement you're going to have to tone it down."

117scape, who poured months of work into the water alone, replies that the water features have already been showcased online. There's a back and forth where "NDA" is mentioned multiple times. Eventually this contentious point is put on the back burner and they change topics.

Suit #1, who had been brooding on the idea ever since it was brought up, trots out: "Understand as a high level executive for an investment group, I am required to perform my due diligence in monetization opportunities. Considering that there was a time when customers were willing to double down for client features on top of a subscription, who's to say they aren't willing to pay for this HD as a service? All this outcry has shown the level of demand for such a product. I'm not signing off on it's release until all these avenues are explored and ruled out."

At this point 117scape realizes that the people who made the executive decision to shitcan his passion project at its most triumphant moment will never apologize to him. Meetings continue along the same line for several days and weeks afterward.

Jagex let this be a good news Friday rather than typical corporate deescalation

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 02:48 AM PDT

I'm one customer who hasn't played in at least 3 months that will return as soon as 117 says this has or will be sorted to their satisfaction. The corporate playbook is to release bad news eod Friday to let it burn out over the weekend but I strongly urge Jagex management to play ball on this one. Hopefully this posts gains traction and they can do the math of upvotes * income

EDIT If you haven't seen the announcement it is indeed a happy Friday. Thank you Jmods, 117 and the higher ups at Jagex for actually listening to your community and staff. See you all in Gielinor I'm glad to be coming back!
