Ask anything about Old School RuneScape here! They are designated for you to ask anything you like that is relevant to the game or this subreddit. Interview with a JMod: Mod Ash

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 10:59 AM PST

    Interview with a JMod

Hello r/2007scape, welcome to Interview with a JMod. This is space where I'll interview Jagex Moderators and maybe other relevant players of the community. Frequency of the interviews will depend on Reddit's reception. Everyone is welcome to leave suggestions, ideas or any type of constructive criticism down in the comments. Keep in mind that this is the first interview and all questions were written by me. All interviews will consist of twenty questions

    _________________________________________________________________________________

    Mod Ash

Mod Ash is a content developer for OldSchool Runescape. He has done many contributions to the game and keeps killing it. He's probably one of the most beloved persons within the community due to his charisma and dedication to the game.

    _________________________________________________________________________________Interview

    28th December 2019

1º - How is a day in the life of Mod Ash?

Wander into the office, see if anything's become a big drama overnight, help fix it if it has, check that my part of the team are all okay with what they're working on, do some programming myself maybe, attend meetings to keep in touch with the other leaders in the team, leave. And maybe pop into the Golden Hind for a quiet pint on the way to the kebab van.

2º - Do you get recognized on the street?

Every few weeks, yeah. Turns out three of the staff in the local Pizza Hut are players too, and my pizza was cooked by someone who's literally got 99 Cooking in OSRS.

3º - Who is/was the JMod with whom you have the best relationship?

Mod Wolf and I are still on close terms. He's just left my house, in fact, having just been over for dinner.

4º - What do you enjoy most about your job?

Getting to do stuff for OSRS, some of which makes a difference.

5º - Do you play the game regularly?

Sadly no - any spare time I have for OSRS these days is fully spent programming the thing, and engaging with its players on social media. I've taken up more charity work than I had when I was younger, too, which doesn't fit so well with gaming.

6º - Do you hate anything about the community or Twitter? (such as annoying questions, memes...)

Not really "hate", but it's a bit disappointing when players try to find the most insulting way possible of expressing themselves, whether that's to me or to other players with whom they disagree. That's not a RuneScape thing, though - I think much political discourse has gone that way too, and it's not serving society well.

    7º - What's your biggest regret as a JMod?

Eh, a few pieces of code of the years needed better checks in them. In terms of really big stuff, I sometimes regretted not ragequitting my job in about 2012, when I was unhappy about the direction of things, and no longer wished to be associated with the studio, but if I'd stormed off into the job market in 2012, I'd not have been here in 2013 when the OSRS opportunity arose.

8º - May we know when Mod Ash's birthday is?

Sorry, given how many banks seem to use that kind of thing as a security measure, quite apart from postal votes, I no longer offer that one.

9º - What was your favorite project you have ever worked on at Jagex?

Love Story quest, 2010. They let me have near sole creative control over the story, code, dialogue, music and even some of the mapping - with credit to Mod John A for help with the story though. Also the Clan Wars update from around that time, introducing the free-for-all portals - I'd designed that in collaboration with a clan on teamspeak, and I think it really made a difference.

10º - What's something you'd consider essential for new JMods to have?

Passion and perseverance, even in the face of setbacks and bad times. Those will happen, however hard one tries, and it's necessary to keep focusing on doing the stuff one can do, even if one can't help with everything else that's going on.

11º - Is there any big project regarding PvP coming up soon? (DMM-type tournaments, PvP All Stars...)

Nothing to announce there, though given how many of the team were interested in ways to use aspects of DMM in a future league for players who'd enjoy that kind of thing, I wouldn't be surprised if we came up with something. A lot of 2020's plans are still unconfirmed, actually, beyond the things we've announced like a clan system, so I hope we'll be able to get something like this too.

    OldSchool Runescape 2019 Reveals

12º - Have you ever thought about quitting your job at Jagex?

Yes, as covered in 7. But if I'd stormed out of the studio in a huff when things didn't go my way, I'd not have been able to serve the game on projects that came later, such as OSRS itself. And it'd be unrealistic to expect things to always go my way in a studio of 350+ people with 350+ visions.

13º - Do you ever feel like people devalue the work of other JMods?

Oh yes. We've often been advised by the experts on Twitter & Reddit to fire staff who made certain bugs, or who failed to catch them during testing, etc, since it's obvious to those players that anyone who makes a simple error must be an idiot who needs permanent removal from the team. And sometimes it might feel tempting to go that way, since I've got a dim view of people putting bugs in the game too! But I don't actually believe in permanently damning people for their first error, just like I wasn't fired for mine, and I'd rather have an experienced team of people who've learnt from the pain of messing up - so long as it's clear that learning is happening.

14º - How do you manage to respond to everyone on Twitter?

I don't. Many players write back with ^bump tweets to complain that I didn't catch their previous ones. And if a player needs something that they'll have to get from the Support team instead of from me, and I've already told them that, they'll likely find they don't get further responses again.

15º - What are your thoughts on r/2007scape**? Do you visit it often?**

It's a place where players discuss things, like any other, and the upvote mechanism gives a few advantages over vanilla things like the old forums (and some disadvantages). I think it's important to remember that it's only a fraction of the community using it, though - similar to Twitter or any other medium. So even if something's universally agreed on Reddit or Twitter, that shouldn't be extrapolated to a community-wide opinion (especially with the downvote mechanic too). I don't tend to hang around Reddit much myself.

16º - Do you watch any OSRS streamers?

    Seldom, sorry.

17º- If you had to choose... Piano or violin? Could you suggest a piece to us?

I enjoy the piano but I'm better at the violin. For musical listening pleasure, Elgar's Salut d'Amore is very accessible and sweet. For something more heavy-going, a full orchestra doing Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony is an emotional ride.

    Edward Elgar Op.12 Salut d'Amore

Tchaikovsky Symphony Nº6, performed by Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra

18º - What other hobbies do you have?

Mostly I play in a local orchestra (https://youtube.com/watch?v=KA9dcx134Q4…). I'm also the treasurer for Cambridge & District Citizens Advice Bureau, an incorporated charity with a six-figure annual turnover (cambridgecab). It's one of the few things I do that isn't principally about my own self-interest, so I try to make myself useful there, whether it's about ensuring we comply with appropriate rules & guidelines, or about discussing the value of our work with potential donors.

19º - If you had to describe yourself to a new person in three words, what would they be?

    "Software developer. Hiya."

20º - What do you expect in 2020? (work, personal life...)

With Mod Roq taking over a lot of the tech admin around OSRS, I'll maybe get to program more than I did in the last couple of years. I'd like that.

So... that's everything! Thanks to Mod Ash for taking his time to perform this interview. Hope you guys found it as interesting as I did!.

What other questions would you have asked to Mod Ash?
Who should be the next one interviewed?

    Cynth ia.
