Defense and strength stuck at 0?

I'm on a free-to-play account and my defense and strength don't increase when I fight things. I've killed a few highwaymen, lots of imps and a couple of goblins, attack is at lvl 12 but defense and strength have literally 0 XP. Am i missing something? do you have to wear a certain type of armour to get XP?
