Have a question about the game or the subreddit? Ask away!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 05:01 PM PDT

Welcome to the daily /r/2007scape question thread!

You can ask anything about Old School RuneScape here. They are designated for you to ask anything you like that is relevant to the game or this subreddit. Remain respectful to your fellow 'scapers when answering questions; there are stupid questions, but it does not mean you should not be respectful whilst answering them.

Keep in mind that this is not a developer Q&A thread - questions for the game developers should be posted in the weekly developer Q&A posts.

PSA: Big Smelters ™ are GASLIGHTING you about the Blast Furnace!!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 08:28 PM PDT

Are you not a maxed skiller? Do you play this game for fun, and not because you're 4000 hours in the hole and it's too late to turn back? Would you consider your account 'mid-game'? Have you ever wanted to do Blast Furnace but haven't purely because you read something saying you weren't progressed enough?

Then WAKE THE FUCK UP. STOP watching Theoatrix guides. STOP reading Reddit comments. STOP listening to maxed efficiency .4 tick wife's boyfriend apologizing sweats and listen to me.

You are being LIED to about the difficulty, and more importantly the requirements, for Blast Furnace. This extends to all Ore Smelting, to a degree.

If you are an aspiring mid-level account, you've probably thought 'I wish I could do Ore Smelting and end-game Smithing'. You've probably then gone to a Theoatrix guide, and seen things like:

    '60+ smithing minimum'

    'access to Stamina Potions'

    'full Graceful set'

    'ice gloves required'

... then promptly closed the video and returned to your shitty CoX and ToB.

    IT'S ALL BULLSHIT.

Graceful? It's nice, but wearing full granite is great as well. 60+ smithing? An actual LIE. You can do the Blast Furnace at any smithing level! It's literally possible at lower levels. You only actually need energy potions! And above all, you could smelt 20 bars, and never once have ice gloves.

This whole time, actual Blast Furnace smelters have been gatekeeping new players from Blast Furnace. I bet you didn't know that no one EVER actually wears full Graceful! They don't even wear the gloves! The stamina pot requirement is complete bullshit - and I promise you won't find a guide that says 'BTW no one actually does this'.

Here's the rub: the majority of stat requirements and swaps that you will see simply increase efficiency. What you have to understand is that to the average end-game OSRS player, 60+ smithing and Stamina Potions ARE required for Blast Furnace because before that point it's more efficient to use the Edgeville Furnace or do 300 more hours of superheat ore or some shits.

But that doesn't mean that you can't get a couple of friends together and figure it out! The unfortunate reality is that having maxed gear means more bars smelted, and more bars smelted means shorter time at Blast Furnace with less opportunity to colossally fuck it all up. But if my recent experiences with Blast Furnace have taught me anything, it's that I could have been doing this a long time ago. Those intimidating expensive swaps feel a lot less necessary if you use a xp/hr calculator and realize that that ice gloves is a 250% xp/hr increase. Get the fuck in there with your 45 smithing, your buckets of water, and shitty spotty cape and figure it out.

NO, it's not as efficient as other methods but FOR FUCKS SAKE I'M ACTUALLY PLAYING THE GAME FOR ONCE. Allow yourself to not be at constant peak efficiency and just enjoy the damn game, and I PROMISE you will wish you had done it all a long time ago. At the end of the day, a gold ore xp drop is a gold ore xp drop, and the only difference is the time it takes to get there.

This goes for all levels of Smithing. Bronze platebodies, Mithril platebodies, Rune platebodies, I have had the experience several times where I realize that smithing isnt as hard as I thought they would be. If you've never done mithril dart tips or cannonballs, do those before jumping into Blast Furnace, because you likely have no actual skill because this game offers very few opportunities to actually play it. OSRS is really not as hard as people act like it is (other than things like Tithe Farm), and if you play any other 'real' game, you can definitely do this.

Go check out the We Do Blast Furnace discord and try to find a mentor to learn with. Even better, get a couple of buddies with scuffed gear and try it out yourself. No, you can't make people smelt with you, and it's perfectly acceptable for a maxed skiller to not want to smelt with your scuffed mid-level, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't try to learn.

I swear, if this subreddit had its way, every person without ice gloves and a Graceful set would be banned from ever participating in group content.

EDIT: For any noobs that may have read this and are now asking themselves if they can actually do Blast Furnace, this is my noob-to-noob checklist, if you have most of these things, you can absolutely do it! Remember, the lower your stats and gear the longer and harder the smelting will be. It definitely may not be as efficient as doing other things, but don't be intimidated and give it a try anyway!

Try to get a few levels in cannonballs/mithril dart tips first before trying Blast Furnace!

Stats: 30+ Smithing for steel bars, 25+ agility so you're not walkign as much

Gear: Must have: buckets of water, ores

Very nice to have (tradeable): Stamina potions

Very nice to have (untradeable): ice gloves, goldsmithing gauntlets

Many things can be swapped out for cheaper alternatives, just remember that every cheap replacement makes your experience slightly harder. Taking energy potions instead of super energy potions isn't a big deal. Take a spotty cape instead of a spottier cape and use the money on 5 more iron ores.

Keep hopping worlds until you get one that isn't PvP enabled. These worlds won't have people trying to kill you. Don't do any minigames that rhyme with Wishing Brawler.

PSA: Stop loading both cannons at Tempoross.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2021 06:04 AM PDT

For max xp/hr and points, only load the first cannon, even if it's disabled by the shock attack.

Loading the second cannon increases kill speed which is overall worse for xp and points per hour.

    That is all.

Edit: I really don't get why people are against this in the comments. Everyone benefits by doing this. Being contrary and going against the majority doesn't make you cool.

    Quick props to Jagex

    Posted: 31 Mar 2021 11:36 AM PDT

I thought I canceled my subscription almost a year ago. I did not actually cancel my subscription. One support ticket to Jagex and a few hours later, and they refunded 6 months. Only hassle was having to sign in like 4 times, on the main website, then billing, then support, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's a case by case basis, but since they were able to see my account hadn't been touched in that time, it went through no issues. The max refund is six months.

I just thought they deserved a little praise for this, because it was totally my responsibility to cancel, and it's 100% on me that I could have multiple charges go unnoticed. That $60 by all rights belonged to them. That being said, a no refund policy would probably sour the odds of me returning when I'm ready.
