I'd like to say 'Thank You' to an old RuneScape nemesis.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 08:30 AM PST

Back in the early 2000's I was quite an impressionable kid, and very naive to boot.

I had a pretty decent childhood, with it's share of normal hardships, but when my parents divorced, times were tough and the conflict around me became overwhelming.

I found an escape from all of this in a game that a close friend showed me called RuneScape. He helped me set up an account, and from the moment I hit tutorial island I was hooked.

I was a f2p for the first few years of playing, never being able to convince my parents to pay 5 dollars per month on me for something they considered a bad influence, but that didn't stop me.

I really had no idea how RPGs worked, so I was god awful at the game. The most fun I had was simply by grinding mining levels, and participating in the massive trade markets in the varrock banks before the GE was even thought of. The flashy text and the sheer amount of people was a sight to behold.

I blew through every small amount of gp I was ever able to accumulate because even the act of buying something, even useless, was so fun to me, being the sheltered kid that I was.

My highest level was in mining, as I enjoyed going to the al kharid desert and chatting with the random travelers that appeared to work on their smelting levels. I decided after a while that mining wasn't as much fun any more, so I was going to keep mining enough to save up for a decent set of armor and weapons, and start participating in some of the quests. I wanted to be a knight. The thought pierced my young brain, and I knew in the fabric of my being that it was my destiny to become the greatest runescape knight that rivaled even zezima.

After a while of mining, smelting, and trading iron bars I was able to purchase a full set of mithril armor and a cape at a discount from someone at the bank. I was beside myself. I felt on top of the world. The next day I remember just walking around the town, showing off, as I was so proud to have it. I didn't even understand the total noob that I actually was.

While strolling one day, though, a man with a HAM cape and gloves complimented me on my armor. It felt really good that someone acknowledged the hard work that I'd put in to get it, and after a while of chatting and getting to know this person, they offered to trim it for me, since they thought I was cool and they could do this favor for me with their crafting level. I was SO EXCITED. we opened up the trade menu and I gave him the armor, I was so excited about how cool my prized possession armor was going to look.

And within a split second, he vanished into thin air.

I was confused at first, then in shock. My early childhood naivety melted away instantly, and in that moment, I knew exactly what had happened. It was gone, and all of that work was effectively erased. I spent the remainder of the afternoon crying, and didn't play the game again for several years.

I tell this story because this one experience put me on a path that I'll forever be grateful for. what's in between doesn't matter so much.

Today, I'm a cyber security specialist with some down time, and I decided to type this story out. I decided that day that I'd never be scammed again, and that I would help other people from being scammed, and as an adult, it's now my job.

That's why I wanted to say 'Thank you' to the old HAM hooded thief that stole my childhood innocence. You took something very special from me, but you also gave me a very valuable skill in not being so trusting of random strangers that say they want to do right by you. And in that I can help others.

And by chance, if you're reading this, my pre-teen self would like to tell you to go fuck yourself, and to go die in a fire.

    Thanks for reading,
