Have a question about the game or the subreddit? Ask away!

Welcome to the daily /r/2007scape question thread!

You can ask anything about Old School RuneScape here. They are designated for you to ask anything you like that is relevant to the game or this subreddit. Remain respectful to your fellow 'scapers when answering questions; there are stupid questions, but it does not mean you should not be respectful whilst answering them.

Keep in mind that this is not a developer Q&A thread - questions for the game developers should be posted in the weekly developer Q&A posts.

IMO, one of the main issues still plaguing this game is a lack of scaling within skilling

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 07:44 AM PST

Why do people like PvM so much? Because going from a level 3 noob to a maxed level 126 is extremely rewarding. Sure, it was possible to complete the Fight caves in 120 hours at level 3, but people have gotten 24 minutes Fire capes with an optimal setup and some learning too. That's an insane difference and it's there no matter which PvM content you isolate for this comparison. Skilling, though? What a joke. You get 20-25k xp/h at Motherlode mine at level 40, while the absolute peak you'll reach at 99 with a Crystal pick, full outfit, big sack and optimized clockwise-mining upstairs without any griefers is ~42k xp/h. It's laughable. I know better XP methods exist, but I just want to showcase how pathetic scaling is within skilling in general.

There's no solution for this, since we refuse to introduce powercreep into the game and don't want to 'devalue' previous achievements. Let me say this for Jagex as someone who's roughly double-maxed with over 600M total xp: catering to 200M xp speedrunners is going to kill the game. Designing things based on EHP is shooting yourself in the foot. There is zero skilling endgame (Zalcano is the closest thing we've got) unless you're one of the handful of hermits going for 200Ms and even then, it's just "more of the same shit for 16,000 hours".

Worse, every new update coming into the game makes skilling more irrelevant by adding buyable BIS. I want about 3x more untradeables, I want some attunements, some useful cape perks - literally anything that'll bring skilling a tiny bit closer to combat in terms of advantages and interest (when it's currently about 95/5 at the moment). It just feels like there's almost no progression: you almost instantly reach Runite tier (for tools), then Dragon shortly after, then Crystal in some cases for virtually no benefit (~2-5% depending on the activity) and then here comes 96% of the work left towards 99, during which you'll linearly gain another measly ~10% efficiency.

Since we are nerfing Dinh's Bulwark, we should also nerf the Door's of Dinh to remain consistent.
