    What's going on with Display names currently?

    Ever since 2014, there's been a couple of display names I've been actively holding watch on in the case they get freed up for future Display Name release waves, including picked names but also including currently blocked/reserved/unavailable display names.

    However, this week I spotted something very strange happening. A couple of names (including one I was trying to go for, unfortunately) have out of the blue been liberated without a display name release wave occurring, and have been in immediate possession of name selling services, with some early birds already having the name bought and applied to their intended account.

    When reaching out for Jagex on twitter, they quote-on-quote said that they "Aren't manually releasing/unblocking names outside of organized release waves". Except that there's now live-hand evidence that that happened. All names have recently been changed in less than a month ago, and when googling for those names at the name selling services, the time gap perfectly adds up. Even some of the commenter/poster names mentioned "early birds" that now hold that name, have the exact or similar enough name that as the account's previous name.

    While name selling business itself is already a gray area, I'm fairly certain something weird is going on, as rare display names being directly passed to name selling services outside of DSN Release waves sounds like Mod Jed business level right there.

    EDIT: Yesterday I've mentioned something like this happening in the RS discord. Earlier today, I have been DMed about someone else also getting the exact same situation, where they've been hunting for their old 4 digit RSN from an old lost account. The name was blocked/reserved ever since the name cleanup in 2014, and the original account after a successful recovery lost its name. Nobody had his display name and even the original account couldn't get it. This week, that name suddenly turned up on another name selling site, having become available with no leading reason or announcement in the same timeframe.

    This then became followed up with a clan member now owning a four-digit name, having bought it. Same story too, the name was unavailable in the reset, was reset but not listed in the Released Name documentation of July-August 2014, and suddenly popped up for sale.

    There definitely is something going on. Either Jagex has silently done another name cleanup and name snipe bots are plucking the fruits, or there are names being handed down to sellers.
