Watching my roommate try to learn Runescape has made me understand the new player experience so much better

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 10:02 AM PDT

So I was in the living room of my apartment doing a Vorkath task when my roommate finally broke down and asked me to show him Runescape. So, I get him set up on his laptop and he start doings tutorial island. The whole time I'm hoping it goes well, but I couldn't have imagined how much he would like this game.

To give a clear picture of what kind of person he is, let me give a quick description. He's 22, very well adjusted, and likes to play puzzle games (we just wrapped up The Witness if anyone knows what that is). So, if you think in terms of either someone who played when they were younger, or someone getting roped in by someone who plays, this feels like a decently average new player.

I did not realize just how out of touch I was with how new players play the game.

He was doing every quest he could get his hands on. When he got to Vampyre slayer, I told him he needed to go train because he was like level 6 still, but he said he wanted to do it still. And he had fun getting absolutely stomped by Count Draynor. I thought that would be the end, and that he would stop playing then and there. No, right back at it. I, like many people, thought that Adventurer John was really dumb, but he liked having the little goals to guide him. To me, it now kinda feels like "Baby's first achievement diary" almost.

I watched with anticipation as he did Ghost Whisperer. I was very very curious to see how he reacted to the skeleton. I didn't want to tell him, but he was also basically a level 3 still and would get stomped. So I watched as he took the skull, and the skeleton got on him, and he started fighting back. I watched for a little bit and then told him to run when he hit like 3 hp left. When I asked him why he didn't run right away, he said it instinctively felt like the skeleton was guarding the skull and that he needed to kill it to progress.

When I woke up this afternoon (yup, afternoon, life's been weird lately), he was in the living room playing. Apparently he has spent like 3 hours doing Ernest the Chicken, and the mad man did it all without a guide. He is determined not to look things up, as he wants to experience the world naturally. But yeah, he even solved the gate puzzle, with the scratch piece of paper to prove it. Then we both sat down and tried to figure out how to do the damn cipher from X Marks the Spot. We eventually got it and he dumped the lamp into Attack. When he got the beginner clue, I told him to not get his hopes up because the loot is pretty bad. In my mind, I always thought beginner clues flopped because they aren't a good moneymaker and not worth the time. I completely forgot about these wanderingly new players who just see it as another call to adventure. After a very quick 2 step clue, he got his casket, and opened it. This mans was so happy over an Air Staff and Steel Platelegs. He immediately went to the chickens to go get 5 defence to put them on.

Moral of the story: I now think of new players differently. I don't think about them as the ones desperately trying to play on the f2p servers. Yes, they will get there eventually, but it is all too easy for them to spend 10+ hours wandering aimlessly having the best time of it. All these little things they have added over the years are likely helping these new players more than we as a somewhat cynical community may want to think. As much as I hope my roommate ends up playing this game a ton and I have a new raids partner, right now it is quite fun, and quite funny to watch him experience the game for the first time.

This has been my little story so far, will update if anything else particularly funny/interesting happens along the way

Tl;dr : watched someone play the game for the first time and can confirm new updates have been a good idea

So a real gambling site now allows OSRS gold as a withdrawal method. Who needs the sand casino when you can use a real casino?

I'm not going to link to the site for what I imagine are very obvious reasons, but the name is some combination of "hype" and "bets" if you really want to track it down yourself.

It offers bitcoin and ethereum deposits, has a couple different betting types, and then for payout offers bitcoin/ethereum and OSRS Gold. I know the screenshot is a bit hard to read but they're offering the GP at a rate of $0.58 per 1 million. Not too sure how that compares to normal gold selling websites.

I'm not encouraging anyone gamble there, if I were I'd have posted an affiliate link lol, but I just thought it was really weird/interesting. Living in an age where an online crypto casino has OSRS gold as part of its economy is certainly unexpected.

Considering they're basically selling OSRS gold since you could just deposit with crypto and then withdraw GP I'm actually wondering if Jagex will do anything about it. They obviously haven't tried very hard to shut down other gold sellers, but maybe this one will be different, who knows.

Not sure if this has ever been a thing before, but it's certainly the first time I've ever heard of it and I hang out on a lot of crypto gambling sites. CSGO skins are a pretty common deposit/withdrawal method, but OSRS gold is definitely a new one for me.
